Did You Know Just That Many Cancers Are Linked To A Vitamin Deficiency?
Vitamins and cancer
prevention
Daily supplements
of vitamins A, C, and E have been shown in a six-month study
to reduce cell abnormalities that can develop into colon
cancer. This preliminary study was conducted at the University
of Bologna in Italy and reported in the most recent issue
(January 1) of the U.S. Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Before the study
began, all 46 participants, men and women, aged 41 to 79,
had had ademonomas (small growths) removed from their colons.
These growths are associated with the development of cancer.
Half the participants were given daily doses of vitamin
A (30,000 IU), vitamin E (70 mg), and vitamin C (1,000 mg).
The other half received placebos.
Six biopsy specimens
were taken from the rectal wall before treatment and then
again at three- and 6-months. When the study ended after
six months, the specimens from the people on the vitamin
regimen showed a significant reduction in abnormal cell
growth not found in the tissue of people who had taken the
placebo.
High doses of vitamins
E and C are known to be safe, but the University of Bologna
investigators expressed caution about the long-term safety
of the relatively high doses of vitamin A used in their
study. The Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin A is
5,000 IU, and other investigators have reported toxic responses
in people taking between 25,000 and 50,00 IU daily for several
months.
